Sue Whitney is the director of the US Export Assistance Center in Cleveland, Ohio. An employee of the Commercial Service, part of the US Department of Commerce, her office is charged with assisting exporters to identify and enter new international markets.
Sue holds a degree in International Business and Economics from The Ohio State University. She began working at the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1988 as an import compliance specialist for the International Trade Administration’s Import Administration. In this position, she investigated unfair trading practices of U.S. foreign competitors. This portion of her career involved extensive overseas travel. As a participant in the Women’s Executive Leadership Program, she has also worked at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation and the Small Business Administration.
She is one of the founding members of the Women In International Trade - Northeast Ohio (WIT-NEO) organization and is a past-president of the same organization. In October 2003, Ms. Whitney passed the U.S. Customs Broker License Examination. In 2011, she received the “Advancing International Trade Award” from NASBITE International.
